No Wonder Why...

So I've been crazy busy lately, and part of the reason is a repair three-man contractor crew I am working with.

I've gone into some large machinery, inspected it, and marked with paint marker all of the areas which need to be addressed; putting instruction repair codes by arrows pointing to what needs to be repaired.  So I've made it about as obvious as it can be, aside from me pointing out each repair spot with my own finger in front of their eyeballs.  What could be more simple, right?

Well, one of the guys is too big to fit into the machines, so he can only do cleaning on the outside.

The other two have now been in three different machines and have missed multiple repair locations in each one, and made repairs that were not necessary in other locations.

How is this relevant to my normal Foolish jive?  These guys are fairly religious, and of the Christian variety.  The leader of the crew has an "I don't need to be here" attitude.  The second man, whose name is Israel, is a decent worker, but obviously lacks in attention to detail.  The big guy has tattoos including praying hands, a large cross, and the Lord's Prayer; and, as I learned soon after his arrival, has been permanently banned from his hometown bar for brawling.

If these guys can't even pay enough attention to look at an arrow pointing them to an area of interest, when they are being paid to do so, what's the likelihood that they are actually going to sit down and really figure out the truth (or lack thereof) of the Bible?  With believers like this, it's no wonder why Christianity will persist for many, many decades beyond now.  I just hope the numbers will continue to wane.

  1. It's obvious, then, that they aren't even following their own book.

Aren't Christians supposed to have a strong work ethic? Y'know, "Do everything as unto the Lord".

"He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster." Proverbs 18:9

"The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat." Proverbs 13:4

"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, where you go." Ecclesiastes 9:10

And yet many of them are just as you describe. They could care less about their work or the quality of it.

  2. I know what you mean, D'Ma! This is one of the areas where I wish more Christians did obey the Book. Instead, it's just more blatant hypocrisy. :-(

  3. Great rant !!
Just shows that "religion" is used very differently by different folks. But in all people it is a clothing of sorts -- or tattoos. :-)

Be glad they don't act like true followers of YHWY -- he destroys nations without a second thought.

  4. Is 'religious' becoming synonymous for "not able to take in new information"??

I don't think any community has ever really solved the problems of incompetence and poor attitude. Hand-holding, education and attitude-adjustments are always going to be necessary (and they are always some of the toughest challenges).

Good luck with work, bro. I think Yoda once said, (in The Clone Wars) "The first step in correcting mistakes is patience." :-)

Thanks man. I think these guys are too lazy for genocide. They'd leave too many survivors for their God to approve. ;-)

    @Andrew
I'm not sure about the "new information," at least without the caveat of new information which is inconsistent with your beliefs.

You've got that right about incompetence. Of course, as D'Ma points out above, being Christian should affect your work. That ol' Protestant Work Ethic... :-)

I was pretty patient with the guys. I'm not the kind who yells and berates. I just pointed out what they missed to them frankly. And I sent photos of their handiwork to the contract project and division managers. They were embarrassed, to say the least.

  6. Isn't there something in some Christian circles that says all you have to do is believe or accept Jesus to be saved? Being a good person has nothing to do with being Christian.

  7. Indeed, Paul, I've run into those circles, and "Being a good person has nothing to do with being Christian." could be their motto!

  8. You need to tell Tim Tebow about these guys. ;-)
